The Celtic tradition has a name for certain places: thin places. These are locations where the veil between the seen and the unseen worlds becomes permeable — where the Otherworld presses close to the surface of the land. Glastonbury is one of the thinnest of them all. This is why a Glastonbury Avalon mystery school is not a metaphor but a working reality.
What Makes a Place 'Thin'
A thin place is not chosen by humans. It is recognised. The Tor, the Chalice Well springs, the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey — these sites carry a frequency that has been felt for thousands of years. Women who come on an Avalon pilgrimage and shamanic retreat often describe the same thing: the land meets them before they meet it. Something shifts that they did not plan and cannot fake.
The Tor, the Well, the Abbey
- ✦The Tor — the spiral hill where the Otherworld is said to open; a place of initiation and vision.
- ✦The Chalice Well — the red and white springs whose waters have been called healing for millennia.
- ✦Glastonbury Abbey — the ruins where Christian and pre-Christian currents meet and weave.
Why a Mystery School Needs a Place
A mystery school is not the same as an online course. The word 'mystery' refers to that which can only be transmitted through direct experience — through the body, through the land, through presence. The way of Avalon for women requires the thin places because some initiations cannot be downloaded. They must be walked, sung, and stood in. This is why Avalon priestess training and lineage includes in-person blocks on the sacred ground itself.
The Transformation That the Land Holds
Women arrive in Glastonbury carrying lifetimes of patterning, and the land does what no technique can: it meets the depth of them. Standing in the waters, climbing the Tor at dawn, singing in the Abbey — these are thresholds. The Avalon mystery school is the structure that holds these thresholds safely, so that the transformation the land offers can actually be integrated.
If you have felt Glastonbury calling, it is the thin place calling. The mystery school is simply the vessel that helps you answer.
